Sustainability at Måsøval

Our Guide –
Towards the Future

Since 1973, Måsøval has been driven by a vision to steward the ocean’s resources in a responsible and sustainable way. Through innovation, local presence and alignment with global standards, we aim to set a new benchmark for sustainability in aquaculture. Our salmon is not just food – it is a symbol of how environmental responsibility and economic value creation can go hand in hand.

As a responsible producer of one of the world’s most resource-efficient sources of protein, we work every day to reduce our environmental footprint and promote sustainable growth for future generations.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Development

We understand that sustainability requires both action and transparency. That’s why we have begun implementing the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), including double materiality assessments, to build a solid foundation for our reporting going forward. This work reflects our commitment to accountability and provides a framework for credible and comprehensive sustainability disclosure in the years ahead.

Where We Are in the Process

  • 2023: We conducted a double materiality assessment to evaluate how sustainability issues affect our business (financial materiality) and how our operations impact people and the planet (impact materiality). The analysis identified 25 key sustainability topics that now shape our reporting strategy.
  • 2024: We are transitioning to the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and developing a more comprehensive sustainability report in line with CSRD requirements. A central focus this year is to complete a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory aligned with the GHG Protocol.
  • 2025: We will publish a full ESG report covering environmental, social and governance performance across the company.
  • Beyond: Our ambition is to take a leading position within sustainability reporting in aquaculture – with measurable indicators, clear goals, and tangible results.

Our Sustainability Priorities

  • Climate-responsible food production: Reducing our carbon footprint through electrification and improved production methods.
  • Fish health and welfare: Investing in advanced vaccination and feed strategies to reduce disease and improve fish welfare.
  • Local value creation: Supporting local communities through employment, sponsorship and partnerships throughout the value chain.

Responsible Stewardship of Ocean Resources

At Måsøval, we see ourselves as stewards of natural resources, with a duty to minimise our footprint for future generations. This means ongoing investment in knowledge and technology – from new delousing methods to improved feed strategies and mortality reduction initiatives.

Transparency and Reporting

We report on our sustainability progress annually, with a focus on:

  • ESG performance: Measuring our environmental impact, social responsibility and governance practices. As we adopt the ESRS framework, our next report will serve as a key platform for communicating progress towards our sustainability goals.
  • Human rights due diligence: Ensuring compliance with the Norwegian Transparency Act and safeguarding respect for human rights throughout our value chain.

We believe the future of food must be in harmony with nature. Through our commitment to openness, innovation and sustainability, we aim to inspire the aquaculture industry – and society – to think bigger and greener.
