1973
The pioneer journey begins
Edvin Måsøval and his sons, Bjørn and Karsten, establish Måsøval Fiskeoppdrett AS and build the first net pens outside their family home on Frøya. With determination and belief in the sea’s potential, they start an adventure that will shape Norwegian aquaculture.
1977
First salmon release
After four successful years of rainbow trout farming, Måsøval releases its first salmon – a bold move for its time.
1978
A family legacy continues
When Edvin passes away, Bjørn and Karsten take over ownership and operations, keeping the company on a steady course forward.
1982
Working towards full control
We purchase one-third of Nordskagfisk, gaining joint operations at sea and access to harvesting facilities – marking a key milestone in our journey to become a fully integrated aquaculture company.
1990
Industry collaboration
Together with Gustav Witzøe, we help found SalMar – now one of Norway’s largest aquaculture companies.
1992
Norway Royal Salmon
We participate in establishing Norway Royal Salmon, reinforcing our role in shaping the industry.
1997
Strategic expansion
Two-thirds of Gunnar Espnes Fiskeoppdrett becomes part of Måsøval, marking a major step in growth.
1998
Investing in smolt
We sell our SalMar share and purchase our first smolt facility, securing control over more of the value chain.
2004-2005
Growing our presence
We expand our operations by acquiring Laksåvika, a smolt facility on Hitra, and Brattøyfisk on Frei, strengthening our coastal presence.
2009-2011
Scaling up
New licenses and the acquisition of Lernes (including four licenses) significantly increase production capacity.
2016
Genetics and future focus
We enter a strategic partnership with AquaGen for broodstock production – an investment in genetics and innovation.
2017
Innovation takes shape
We apply for four development licences for Aqua Semi – a groundbreaking semi-closed steel unit designed to improve sustainability and fish health.
2019
Increasing smolt capacity
We are awarded the four development licences for Aqua Semi and acquire Åsen Settefisk, boosting smolt production and reinforcing our commitment to innovation.
2020
Investing in people and growth
We secure new licenses and sign a ten-year collaboration with Guri Kunna VGS to develop future aquaculture talent.
2021
A milestone year
We acquire Pure Farming, Stokkøyskjell, Gunnar Espnes Fiskeoppdrett, Måsøval Fishfarm, and 65% of Pure Norwegian Seafood, becoming a fully integrated salmon producer. The Vartdal Group joins Måsøval, and we list on Euronext Growth.
2022
Integration and collaboration
Focus shifts to consolidating new businesses. We enter a co-location agreement with Frøya Laks for better resource utilisation.
2023
Strengthening leadership
Helge Kvalvik becomes CEO. We expand leadership and reorganise strategically to support growth, efficiency, and development.
2024
Full value-chain control
We acquire TL52, harvesting facility on Hitra, and establish our own sales department. We also celebrate an approved demonstration licence – another milestone in our pioneer journey.
2025
Setting the course for the future
We launch Måsøval’s new 2025–2030 strategy, chart the well-boat Njord Kya to strengthen fish welfare and logistics, and sign a strategic agreement with ODE. These steps reinforce our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and responsible growth.
2026 and beyond
Leading with responsibility
We focus on biology-first principles, sustainability, and innovation. Our goals include improving fish survival and welfare, reducing environmental impact, adopting new technologies, and strengthening partnerships. With full integration from fjord to table, we aim to remain a trusted, responsible supplier and create long-term value for communities and customers.
